This week : Gustav Klimt

Gustav Klimt, Hope II, 1907-1908, Oil, gold and platinum on canvas, 110×110 cm, New-York, MOMA

I like this work for its decorative aspect

I like the rounded, realistic treatment of the body, which contrasts with the very flat dress.

I like this work for its reference to Byzantine icons.

I like the contrast between the sumptuousness of the canvas and the tragedy it suggests (with the skull resting on the pregnant woman’s belly).

And you, what do ypu think about it ?
